Historical Points of Interest
Brian Shenstone, Steve Bandy, and Bob Kirstine are all at least “three time” winners of the title, each having won it in locations other than their home waters. Bandy won the title in 1980 by sailing the vessel “Draco.”
Brian Shenstone and Bob Orr won back to back titles with the same boat in 2004, 2005 2007 & 2008 and accomplished the feat in foreign waters. Their victories are testimony to the long standing durability of the Cal 25. Steve Bandy was also instrumental in starting the rotation of the national event that we use today. Over the years racers competing under the Burgees of Long Beach Yacht Club and Bayview Yacht Club have each won the title seven times.
Bill and Sally Martin own a Santa Cruise 70 called “Stripes” which they campaign in the Great Lakes. They had owned a Cal 25 for many years and missed the wonderful one design sailing that they had done in the Detroit Fleet. Their son and a friend found their old Cal in a yard in rough condition and purchased it. Needless to say, it was quite a surprise for Bill and Sally. A monumental renovation project was undertaken which produced a “show room new” Cal 25. Sally Martin then won the 1999 Nationals in Detroit. Unfortunately, the boat was burned in a fire at Bayview Yacht Club in the winter of 1999/2000 along with three other Cal 25s.
Tom Schreiber, 1991 National Champion, is a charter member of the Detroit Cal 25 fleet and is still competitively racing Anne Mayme in his 70’s.
