2008 CAL 25 NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP REGATTA AUG. 15-17 FINAL RESULTS Port Huron Yacht Club
The Nationals were sailed on Friday, Saturday and Sunday August 15 - 16 -17 in lower lake Huron. As a result of a prevailing North wind for several days prior to the regatta, seas were lumpy and keeping the boat powered up was key to making speed. All three days were sunny with temps in the 80's and winds on Friday were in the 12 to 14 knot range. With an approaching front from the West, Saturdays winds dropped off to 6 to 10 knots and Sundays racing was cancelled after three and a half hours of waiting for any sign of a consistent breeze. The Detroit fleet made a solid showing occupying the top five spots followed by the Long Beach team ("Hullabaloo" aka "One Time"), Art & Scott Melendres and crew, who had great boat speed but wrestled with judging the Lake Huron current at the marks. Charlie Husar represented the Annapolis fleet sailing on a Detroit boat "Bada-Boom". With Brian Shenstone and Team Draco winning another National Regatta the National trophy returns to Bayview Yacht Club until next summers event and Team Draco will have another shot at defending in the breeze-with-flat-water sailing in Long Beach.
