US245 Pagan Baby dominated this year’s Bayview One Design regatta, May 31 – June 2. The winning crew consisted of owner Marc & Eric Hollerbach, Adam Hollerbach and Scott Pertriz. This crew sailed an awesome series being the most consistent competitor of the event with three second place finishes, a first and a fourth; ending up with only 11 points overall.
Only three points separated the second, third, and fourth place finishers, Paul & Ross Nuechterlein’s US758 Never Alone, John & Tracy McAllister’s US466 Patriot and Elliot Lee’s US1640 Voodoo Child, respectively. Rounding out the top five of sixteen competitors was Karl Kuspa’s US726 Wicked.
After a couple postponements on Friday due to a lack of wind in the morning, the race committee eventually abandoned the races for the day. Some Cal-25s nonetheless made it out to the race course eager to compete and tuned their boats to the lighter wind conditions.
Saturday featured light to medium wind conditions and choppy seas to challenge the racing crews. Pagan Baby earned a four point lead by pulling off two second place finishes, with the rest of the challengers scoring one good race and one not so good race. Upon finishing, all the crews had to deal with a nasty storm that rolled in with the 6 hp outboard motors struggling to make headway across the lake and into the river. For a period of time the CSYC boats were unable to even see Lakeshore through the hard down pour.
Three races were held on Sunday. Some of the heavier crews were getting excited before the first race as the wind was close to the upper range of the 150s. However, just before the start of the first race, the winds let up and continued to lessen with each race of the day – still providing ample opportunity for the crews to prove their sailing skills.
Seventeen Cal-25s participated in this year’s Bayview One Design regatta, making this group the largest one design fleet of the BOD event.
