DRYA changed this year’s DBC regatta format from the point-to-point to a windward leeward course in an attempt to increase participation. There was hope that we would see more Cal-25s on the starting line this week too – unfortunately this was not the case.
As it turned out we had another light air regatta and only two Cal-25s competing in a match race. The start featured match racing tactics with both boats trying to get an advantage. The boats got off the line clean and tested each other up the first leg. The RC did a nice job signaling a change of course at the leeward mark which provided a good second windward leg.
The race committee postponed the start of the Cal-25 second race with threatening clouds approaching from the south. It appeared there was good stable wind and a race could have easily been conducted. Both Cal-25s wanted to get the second race underway but didn’t want to stick around too long under a postponement and possibly get drenched only to have the day end with an abandonment. Twenty minutes into the postponement, both Cal-25s decided to call it a day. As the two Cals were nearing the CSYC harbor the race committee lifted the postponement and started a sequence for the remaining PHRF boats.
