2018 GLYC May-19 Recap

The first DRYA race of the 2018 season is now in the history book. What started off looking like it was going to be a cold wet day actually turned out to be a great day for racing. Five eager Cal-25 crews showed up to the starting line for the first contest, FRUNOBULAX, Never Alone, Patriot, Second Wind, and Whitefang. The conditions ranged from no wind and lumpy seas to light wind with little seas and up to a med-strong breeze where the travelers were let down with occasionally luffing mainsails.

The RC posted a 40 minute postponement before the first start with the wind eventually filling in for a respectable day of racing. All the Cals got off to good clean starts on both races with the RC boat being heavily favored in the first race and marginally favored in the second. Truth be told – the RC was favored about 35 degrees in the first and about 17 degrees in the second race.

After two exciting races the top three boats were locked in a three way tie for first having the following scores: 3-1, 1–3, 2–2. In fact, the tie had to be broken between two boats by determining who beat who by how much time.

This was a good first regatta for the crews and several lessons were learned from the school of hard knocks. 1 – Read the SIs thoroughly so you know what the turning marks are – it always helps minimizing the distance sailed by properly rounding all marks as close as possible. 2- Practice, Practice, and Practice or a least have one shakedown cruise before the first race in order to minimize issues that should not happen during a race. Quoting Captain Ron – “if something is going to happen – it’s going to happen out there”. ie. partially dragging an engine, forgetting winch handles, dragging a swimming later, etc..

This coming Saturday is the DYC PP race with the finish off the DYC dock. Hoping to see more Cal-25s this weekend. Don’t forget to register for the BOD – it would be great to have 20+ boats at the line and be deemed the largest class.

Under who beat who by who by how much or under total elapsed time, Whitefang should be 1st for the day. Something else must be in the scoring algorithm.

      DRYA Tie breaking rules:

1 – Whoever has the most 1st places will be deemed winner
2- If still tied, whoever has the most 2nd places and down will be deemed winner.
3- If still tied, then winner is determined but looking at elapse time from each race. Whomever, beat the other boat by more time is deemed the winner.

** I’ll look up the official rules and comment back (this reply is from memory) …
